Yes, you'll need a UK bank account. There are several bank accounts available to suit your financial needs, and most banks offer student accounts. Once you’ve chosen a bank, visit a branch with identification and proof of your UK university studies to open your account. Having a UK bank account will help you avoid foreign currency charges that you’d incur with a non-UK account.

Booking Your Room - Payment Options
You’ve secured your room by paying your deposit - now it’s time to consider your payment options. At Derwent Students, you have two choices for paying your accommodation fees. Most international students choose to pay their rent in full before arriving in the UK. However, you can also opt for payment in instalments, though this requires a guarantor - typically someone based in the UK, like a relative or family friend, who agrees to cover your rent if you’re unable to pay.
Guarantor – Housing Hand
If you want to pay in instalments but don’t have a UK guarantor, don’t worry! We partner with Housing Hand, which offers a UK guarantor service specifically for international students. For more information about their services and fees, please visit their website at www.housinghand.co.uk or contact them directly at 0207 205 2625.

FAQ's
Do international students need UK bank accounts?
Do I need a new cellphone plan?
Depending on your home country, your mobile phone may work in the UK, so it’s a good idea to check with your current provider. If your phone does work, keep in mind that international calls and texts can become costly. Many shops offer a range of smartphones, and you can also get a ‘pay as you go’ SIM card to control your spending. Additionally, many mobile networks offer international bundles to help manage costs. All of our student accommodation properties provide fast, reliable Wi-Fi, so you can easily Skype or FaceTime your loved ones back home and stay connected via social media.
How can I travel around the UK?
While studying is important, don’t forget to explore your new home! Travelling around the UK by public transport is often easy and affordable. If you’re aged between 16-25 or a full-time student, you can purchase a 16-25 Railcard for £30 per year or £70 for three years, which offers 1/3 off your rail travel. Alternatively, if you prefer coach travel, consider getting a Young Persons Coachcard from National Express, also offering 1/3 off your coach journeys for just £10 per year. Many major cities provide local travel cards for unlimited travel on trams and buses.
